The above image may be a bit confusing and perhaps a little frightening at first glance. It need not be, bipolar disorder in my opinion has been around since "sin and sickness" entered the world, so basically forever. The only thing that has changed is what it has been called over the course of time. It's nothing new, yet people are still unaware and have mixed feelings on the subject. Most people I've encountered and told about my illness have been very accepting. I know others though haven't had the same response I've received. People fear what that don't understand, and people are quick to judge and make assumptions. It's normal human behavior, but it's my hope to help others understand this disorder. In an effort to be an advocate for mental illness, I hope what I write and explain to others will help those who have bipolar disorder. I also hope it helps others who know someone, or will encounter somebody with it. Bipolar is an illness of the mind, a major mood disorder which affects the body and nervous system as well. You experience extreme shifts in moods, thinking, and energy levels. There's different types of bipolar and everyone has a different level of experiencing them. There's generally an extreme up side to the mood disorder called mania, and there's an extreme down as well, severe depression. I won't get into it, but there's everything inbetween as well. It occurs because people are born, or develop a chemical imbalance later in life in the brain. It's not for certain what causes it, but it is a family illness usually. If it's in your genes you have a greater chance of being diagnosed. It does however skip generations I read. Stress is what drives bipolar, it's usually what brings it out. Bipolar disorder is very manageable and can be treated. However, there's no cure at this time in history. There is hope though and you can lead a fulfilling life!
